Splintering Wood is written for unaccompanied B-flat clarinet and is inspired by the clarinet works of Eric P. Mandat. It can be divided into three sections (fast-slow-fast), and uses several extended techniques, such as quarter-tones, glissandi, and flutter tonguing. In addition, the piece contains several alternate fingerings and timbral trills. This piece attempts to explore the capabilities of the clarinet, and the title represents the breaking down of conventional clarinet techniques and the desire to push the limits of its sound.
